'Alphabet' in Spanish is 'abecedario', while 'illiterate' is 'analfabeto' or 'without alphabet'.

Maybe the fact that the standard word goes up to the fourth letter, rather than just the second, suggests that Spanish-speaking schoolkids learn their alphabet twice as fast as English-speakers.

They certainly have a far easier time of it with spelling.
