Although US usage (perhaps we could coin USAge as an abbreviated term?) seems to insist on the singular for sports teams, which just sounds so wrong to my British ears. Particularly when the name of the team is also a geographical location, and the plural form so handily expresses the concept of 'the group of sportspeople representing the district/city/country of...'.
