An illuminating family story, Maryan. The system in Spain is that in cases of accidental or sudden death the family will be asked whether the deceased had any objection to donating organs, in the absence of an explicit statement - by donor card or other registration systems. So most people don't take any affirmative action, effectively leaving the decision up to their relatives in the event of death. There doesn't seem to be much public campaigning to encourage donor cards, so I suppose the health system feels things work well enough as they are, but it's worth bearing in mind. I don't even know where you get the cards from. I'll ask my doctor.
