Aussie slang is great. There's this real down-to-earth, mucking about playfulness to it. The best of Australian society, I think. But as with much of that world of jokey banter, there can also be a lot of really socially backward (white, male) thinking, a wilful ignorance of one's own and others' pain. That's my perspective from the UK, only having experienced the country through the media, and a fair number of Australians I've known in Europe.
