It’s fair to say that the twisted nightmare of Putin’s decadent dictatorship just took another irrational and violent turn or three with Prigozhin’s mutinous march on Moscow, and sudden about-face in retreat to Belarus.

What the hell is going on? Here’s an outlandish theory for you:

Prigozhin loses the plot after his mercenary base is attacked by the Russian regular military, who for some reason don’t take kindly to being constantly berated as cowards and traitors by their upstart rival.

He soon realises that he has embarked on a trudge of the Light Brigade as he leads his relatively meagre forces towards the capital.

But also realises that despite his laughably inadequate military strength, he has seriously undermined Putin’s already shaky credibility (and turned his irrational paranoia up to 11). And also has some support for his insurgency among plenty of people who are just looking for a hero to restore some bloody glory to Mother Russia. Whatever that means.
