The BBC put together a little sequence for each competing nation featuring their flag, visually worked into some typical aspect of local culture and history. I think one nation had theirs stamped in iron at a foundry; Greece was a bathing towel rolled out at a lido, I seem to recall.
I was in Spain at the time, watching on Spanish TV. The presenter warned viewers, in very serious, hushed tones, to please not be offended when their national segment came on - Spain's red and yellow was represented by stripes of ketchup and mustard on a hotdog at Alton Towers. The Hispanic equivalent of Terry Wogan was not amused.
