I completely agree, Nat. The film does a remarkable job of prompting reflection on the whole of our lives, cradle to grave, by taking just that one, distilled happening, positioned at just the moment when we arrive at our realisation of the future, and all that means, right down to mortality itself.

I was introduced to it at an age when perhaps it shouldn't have struck so deeply - I was 20 and at university, and a friend, editor of the university newspaper who dreamed of being a journalist, and had doubtless seen much of Gordie in himself - suggested watching it.

It had been his favourite since he saw it aged 13 when it first came out, but even to adult me it immediately seemed so meaningful.
