I don't know if you're familiar with the Irish/European budget airline Ryanair, Edward. They have an outspoken CEO called Michael O'Leary, who is despicable in his business practices (but then who isn't?), but refreshingly honest with it.
I remember him saying a few years back 'All these CEOs go on about 'our staff are our greatest asset. That's bullshit - they're your greatest cost. You'd get rid of them tomorrow if you could.'
I translate dozens of corporate presentations, mission statements and all that crap - I have yet to see one that doesn't include this 'greatest asset' line. Who do they think they are kidding?
