I have found this seems to happen fairly naturally. I've actually been surprised, as an erstwhile avoider of 'social media', at the extent to which joining Medium has felt like a fairly plausible simulation of genuine socialisation in an offline setting.

It reminds me above all of going to university - in the first few weeks you meet/hang out with/form an interest in/aversion for a load of different individuals and social groups, which gradually shift and morph over the initial months, before settling down into a fairly stable pattern.
