I imagine that a large part of this gear obsession - which I have also noted and find quite off-putting, intimidating even - is down to

(a) the high proportion of men writing about photography, and their boyish fixation with measuring, numbering and technically detailing things; and

(b) a related desire to play the knowledgeable gatekeeper with secret codes and codices.
