I recall when The Guardian in the UK did a 'Top 100 UK #1 Singles' ranking, counting down week by week, there was much derision when The Pet Shop Boys' West End Girls was placed at number 1 of all time. (Clearly trolling readers for clicks, but still...)
One commenter said that they were quite happy with the choice, as for them it had a special significance as the song that both triggered and encapsulated a sense of the enticing, edgy naughtiness of adult life when they first heard it.
I replied that I knew what they meant, and the song that had done the same for me, a year (?) earlier was Laura Branigan's Self Control. It aroused intriguing new tinglings, so to speak, without wishing to overshare.
