I remember reading that 'I Don't Like Mondays' was about a school shooting, and thinking 'That's so weird - I didn't even know they had school shootings in Ireland, let alone back in the 70s'. It never occurred to me at the time that they meant 'school shooting in the USA', and as this was in pre-Internet days, I just left it at that. I only discovered the full version years later, but hadn't realised until reading this that it was the first such incident.
Sadly, school shootings these days are so commonplace there that you can hardly imagine anyone writing a song in shocked response even in the town in question, let alone across the Atlantic.
