I tend to think of these seemingly trite lines as voicing the inarticulate thoughts of a simple person facing a tragically complex situation.

Perhaps a story spun from a line of dialogue overhead at a hospital payphone. A moment in time given a past and future with the sparsest of narrative resources.

Not my favourite of his, I have to say, but there is more to it than meets the eye, I would suggest.
