I think another issue is the demand for 'quaintness' in destinations, and disappointment - even entitled outrage - if farmers have tractors, rather than oxen, in what the tourist had hoped would be an idyllic rural retreat. Idyllic so long as you don't have to plough your land with oxen to provide subsistence for your family, of course. And so long as your hotel has functioning aircon and a nicely chilled minibar.
