I think maybe Emilia Pérez has ended up being burdened with way too much cultural baggage just by achieving the international profile it has, especially with the Oscars attention.

I suspect there's a sense of 'If anyone is to make a film that finally depicts Mexico at the top tier of international filmmaking, it must be exactly the image we (whoever 'we' are) want to portray (whatever that is)'.

I doubt the makers expected quite the level of scrutiny every element of the movie got - nor the way the publicity engine overdrive of the awards season would blow up in their faces.

Once enough people were on the 'let's pick this apart' bandwagon, everything else is maybe collateral damage in the outrage frenzy.
