I think that one of the problems with US politics is that it's a piece of flatpack furniture put together wrong.

Someone missed out the part required in Step 1, labelled 'Left Wing - attach on opposite side to Right', and carried on building the rest of it, then wondered why it wouldn't stand up straight.

But now it's too much hassle to take the whole thing apart and start again properly, so it keeps falling over, bashing people on the head and spilling its contents all over the place.

The Democrats (and the entire US Overton window) are to the right of what would be a standard position for a mainstream European right-wing party, such as Germany's CDU, in terms of health, education, transport, energy...
