I think this is one of the ways that totalitarianism continues to cause harm for a generation after it falls, by unleashing the pent-up rebellion that ends up making a virtue of potentially harmful practices - pornography, prostitution, hard drug use- and encouraging a rejection of positive aspects of the regime, such as cultural education: ballet, chess and piano tuition for working class families, for example.

The baby goes out with the bathwater as the chains are violently cast off.
