I think you'd probably like Buddenbrooks as well. A lot of people find it a tedious slog, but I remember quite enjoying it as a long-haul read.

Mann certainly knew his craft. After all, you don't get a Nobel Prize for Literature for just tossing off a military history book or writing a few protest songs, do you?
