I used to think that the islands - and their famous giant tortoises - had given their name to the animal in Spanish, but it turns out that it's of pre-Roman Iberian derivation, and that the islands were named after the animal by the Spanish colonists. So they could easily have ended up being the Tortugas Islands instead.
