I was thinking about this very issue yesterday, Nevena, and planning on writing a piece about it.

If Medium wants to find a solution to the huge waste that their article trash heap represents, I think they need to seriously improve - or probably rewrite from the ground up - how the algorithm works, to more effectively analyse readers' engagement with articles, the content and style of the pieces themselves, and then trawl through past stories to serve them up to readers with an affinity for them.

This should be quite possible in 2024.
