Watching the first one again with my nephew at Christmas, Kermode may have had a point. Depp’s character Jack Sparrow is more irritating than I remember. But maybe that’s because you know the Depp backstory. So one casts aspersions based on his real-life character, whether true or false. Which is probably unfair, otherwise no one is ever going to watch Kevin Spacey again.
