In his eclectic take on pop music history, Words and Music, Paul Morley cheekily slips The White Stripes into his timeline of classic 1960s bands. It's a beautifully subtle and snarky putdown of their unimaginative and derivative sound, or more of those who wet their knickers over them as some kind of rock'n'roll resurrection. At least I assume that's what he meant. Often hard to tell with Mr Morley.
