In many cases, they aren't actually locals - they go to Ibiza for the summer season - which in fact is half the year or more, but increasingly it isn't worth their while. As one of the guys in that article says - 'My family are in a refugee camp in Western Sahara, so I'm not complaining'. And the Uruguayan guy in the caravan seems quite chilled about it. But you can't run an industry offering those conditions.

And restauarants are now competing with tourists to rent apartments for their workers, driving property prices up even higher for locals who live there all year round.

I was in Ibiza two summers ago, and it was fantastic. All manner of bars, restaurants, leisure services, craft shops, the whole island neat and spruce. It felt like 'a perfect version of Spain'. But beneath the surface it is in real trouble, socially and ecologically in particular. 50,000 litres of water in each of those individual swimming pools...
