Perhaps in this contest between two almost equally unpopular choices on either side, a figure like Colin Powell, able to draw support for different reasons from both sides of the political divide and different demographics, might have stood a better chance than Christie, who presumably would have a tougher time attracting the democrats he would need, outside of his home region, perhaps.
