It reminds me of that bit in The West Wing, where one of the electoral strategists is talking about racing yachts, and how as a young crewmember he was told off for using a [whatever spiky, hooky pole thing they have on yachts] to dislodge some seaweed from the hull to reduce their drag.
But by fiddling about with the pole he was causing more drag than by just leaving the seaweed be.
Claudio Ranieri was known as 'the tinkerman' at Chelsea for constantly fiddling with his first team even when they were winning. But I suppose he had the pedigree to do it if he wanted to.
