It seems like just yesterday, yet also an age ago, that English-speaking culture (especially in the UK) felt the need to Frenchify anything before it could be considered high-class.

A good, solid nine and a half centuries from the Norman invasion of Britain onwards.

And now that sociolinguistic reputation seems to have crumbled faster than un petit garçon can say "L'empereur! I n'a pas de trousières!"
