It's odd how seldom this is mentioned these days.
People talk about brick-sized mobile phones, screeching dial-up connections and other facets of the nascent digital era, but the whole Millennium Bug thing hardly gets a mention when we look back to those babysteps into cyberspace.
I was sent a TV script to translate earlier in the year - a vampire series set on New Year's Eve 1999, and all the characters were talking about how 'maybe civilisation will collapse tonight'. I realised it was years since I'd even heard or thought about it, and in fact the writers had added an explanatory footnote, I guess in case a Millennial (ironically) commissioning editor read it and completely missed the reference.
