It's taken me a long time to come round to the view that nuclear will have to be part of the solution to the crisis, but I think I'm there now. It still gives me the creeeps, though.
And the idea of ramping up nuclear as a stop-gap while we develop sufficient capacity, stability and storage to go fully renewable still seems counterintuitive, given the loooong-term issue of waste disposal.
Here in Europe, at least, the chosen option of deep geological storage is still very much at the planning stage in most countries, I believe, while the holding pens fill up with waste from the nuclear capacity already installed.
I'd feel much happier if there were a realistic prospect of a means of turning nuclear power plant waste into energy+largely harmless, very short half-life waste with a proven, scalable storage option.
But we do not, perhaps, have the luxury of long research lead times.
