I've seen plenty of fake accounts with FoM status as well. And 'verified author' status, as mentioned in another comment.

Those badges are relatively cheap and easy to get, and are probably worth the investment. If $15/month cons three times as many people into reading your crap as $5/month, thanks to the halo of authenticity...
