Maybe they can reconstruct missing stats, maybe they can't. We will never know, no matter what they say. Because by definition they can't know either.

Even if reads, etc., can be reliably calculated, what they can't do is restore the trust that users, particularly new users, will have lost in the platform, or the relationship between writer and reader, undermined by not being able to respond to commenters, because you don't know they exist.

That's a really important part of building a readership. I feel really bad for any new writers that have just had their first boost when this happens - the impact will be completely nerfed. Gutting.
