My mental jury is still out. Maybe it's like the way we see faces in tree bark and cornflakes. We are hardwired to find pattern and meaning in the random vastness of the cosmos, even where it maybe doesn't exist. Did we create religions for the same reason we seek meaning in coincidences and repeated numbers? Just to make some sense of it all and stay sane, to convince ourselves there is a path across the desert? It reminds me a little of the Total Perspective Vortex in The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
