You can't drive without being an accomplished and attentive passenger and navigator first.
I didn't actually start driving until I was in my early thirties. But by then had clocked up thousands of miles accompanying parents and friends on journeys, observing roads, road conditions, having the atlas open on my lap in case it was needed, tracking where we were, but saying nothing unless input was needed.
And that probably made me a better, more aware driver when I actually took the wheel myself.
I'd never really consciously thought of it that way, but it makes sense.
