Some people claim that the word 'tariff' is derived from the placename, as the local warlord would demand payment of ships passing through the strait.

This is complete bollocks, it turns out, but is a good story, and seems to make so much sense. Apparently the real etymology is via the much more tediously bureaucratic Arabic term 'arrafa', meaning 'notification'.

Pirate protection money is much more fun - you can see why that version caught on.
