Thanks, Ann. The idea occurred to me when that Wellerman sea shanty came on the other day, and got me thinking about how stuff these days can 'go viral' and take over our culture, purely out of novelty, not intrinsic merit, or even genuine public interest - just he(a)rd mentality. And what might have happened in days gone by if cultural works could have be crowded out the same way, rather than enjoying privileged status.
There's a lot of stuff that's crap, of course, and deserved to be crowded out but wasn't. But it's interesting how much less curated culture is these days.
