Thanks for that professional insight, Geoff. It must have been a fascinating experience. I sometimes wish I had gone into the civil service in some capacity after university, and drifted towards Europe, or directly into the EU apparatus. But I was somewhat allergic to wearing a suit and tie, and my dad recounted such horror stories of civil service life that I was rather put off it as a young man.
