That is one downside of Spain and Portugal, a price you pay for the numerous quality of life benefits they offer. The idea of heading off to Germany or Scandinavia for a holiday is economically daunting.

That said, there is a reason why 84 million people a year come to Spain and another 6 million to Portugal.

I've lived here for over 20 years, and have never really felt the 'need' to travel abroad. By holidaying here we support our local economy and avoid transport emissions.
