That's a common barrier to integration, born of fear, but ultimately of inequality. If the incomers didn't have so much more material wealth, they wouldn't be under threat. As a tourist, you can fake it a but by dressing down, using a scruffy rucksack, not taking out posh phones and cameras, and generally not being a loud, entitled arsehole.

But it's harder to hide a house, car, etc... I have another piece coming out in a few hours about my dreams of settling down in Venezuela, and how they were crashed down to earth when confronted with reality.

Right now I am working on 'How McDonald's Could Save the World', also about cross-border empathy and equality. It's my new microniche!
