The EU is far from perfect, but right now it's the best the world has, as a (relatively) cohesive voice at least trying, despite the resistance of vested interests, to do the right thing.

Reassuringly -or worryingly- there is probably greater cohesion and drive coming from the technocratic structures than the democratically elected representatives either through national heads of government and ministers, or the European Parliament.

Reassuring, because it means that sensible, science- and evidence-led policy continues to be driven forward despite electoral cycles and aberrations.

Worrying, because it's dangerous to give too strong a message that 'democratic institutions don't matter - we have experts to sort out policy'.

Right now the technocrats are more or less on the side of the angels, though still too beholden to corporate interests and lobbying.

But it's always good to have clear checks and balances just in case.
