The FA Cup used to have a similar effect in England, but no one seems that bothered any more, as European soccer is a much bigger draw and prize for the top clubs.

I guess that's an advantage of the USA mainly focusing on its own sports - you get to keep the main event as part of the traditional calendar, which works for those who partake, and those who simply take the chance to keep the sports fans out of their way.
