The fact that those massive waves are rolling into huge cliffs and rocks at Nazaré, rather than a sandy beach, makes it all the more heart-stopping, I think. When I taught English in Galicia just up the Atlantic coast, one of my colleagues was an experienced surfer, brought up in South Africa, and so familiar with big ocean waves. But he found some of the surfing spots along the coast there quite awe-inspiring.
