The family element is a big part of all this for kids, I think. The fascination of exploring other relatives' homes when you visit, seeing how something as familiar as just a house, with its bedrooms, kitchen cupboards, routines and habits can seem so utterly exotic. The smell of towels on the radiators in Nana's bathroom so different from at home, the way you have to jump to get onto Grandma's spare bed because it's so massively high (maybe two inches higher than the ones you have back home).
