The sequence of albums from Surfer Rosa to Trompe le Monde is to my mind the greatest run of releases by any band ever. Not a single dud, and all packed with classic tracks.

I'm biased, of course. They came along at just the right point in my life, through the end of high school into university. Some other favourite bands diverged from my tastes during that period spanning the late 80s and early 90s. Either they grew up too much, or not at all.

But Pixies somehow remained entirely in step with what I wanted music to sound like as I evolved from a boy to a... bigger boy, let's say.

But of all of them, Surfer Rosa has the most special place in my heart.
