The thing is, I don't think that Medium's failings are down to the pursuit of money over quality. I think they would make more money (i.e. subscriptions) if they did a better job of matchmaking readers and articles. I think they would do it if they could. But they don't have the expertise to do so, and are embarrassed to admit it.
Fair enough. But to draw attention to (and even celebrate) the way in which viral growth can happen online - irrespective of quality - seems extremely dumb, when it comes simultaneously with 'building a better Internet with skilled human curation, free of superficial clickbait'.
'Idiotically self-defeating' doesn't do it justice.
