There's an intriguing work written in the 1970s by Ulrich Plenzdorf called The New Sorrows of Young W. in which a young man comes across a copy of Goethe's book (in a toilet, maybe?) and begins using quotes from it in his daily struggles. He calls it his 'Wertherpistole', I seem to remember (very long time since A-level German...)..
