There's the rub...

For the moment, it's just words.

There's a clear real-world mismatch between

a) You can't use AI for paywalled stories; and

b) We have no way of reliably detecting AI.

And Medium's bot-hunters also seem to be in a losing battle, with the very basic arithmetical safeguards you mention not having been deployed (story and follow limits).

Management have now spoken. Belatedly, and only once the natives were revolting. That is something, but frankly no one gets a medal for simply just about managing to do the job they are paid for.

It's the practical implementation that we need to see.
