They have a fascinating, globe-trotting history (including being the first Europeans to reach North America, but keeping it secret as they didn't want anyone to know where they were getting their cod from, supposedly!). There's a really interesting book by Mark Kurlansky about Basque history. And another about cod - both worth digging out.
