This is interesting - I came up with almost the same expression last winter after working up a sweat chopping logs in the back yard.

'If you cut the firewood, you don't need the fire.'

I don't recall ever having heard the phrase, though it may well have filtered into my subconscious over the years (all 52 of them - that's quite a while).
