This is the fundamental point, I think. Languages are simply a tool for communication. Unless you have a driving need or desire to communicate in a language other than your own (and an opportunity to attempt that regularly), you are unlikely to get far. Unless you are simply a language-learning enthusiast who does it for a hobby, in which case you probably have an aptitude and plenty of practice anyway.
