True, Luce. But some things seem so obviously translatable, that it feels odd - and would be frowned upon - not to translate. Even if you know that the translation, despite being perfectly adequate in a 'dictionary' sense, falls so far short of conveying to the L2 reader what an L1 reader would have understood. Without copious footnotes, which likewise would be inappropriate or cumbersome.

We should maybe all switch to Esperanto or Volapük. Except that wouldn't help either, because there would still be just one word for 'tea', despite its myriad meanings.
