I spent a few months in Tokyo about 20-odd years ago and was amazed by the music scene. Real Through the Looking Glass stuff - things that looked and sounded familar, but were somehow so very different.

I used to drink in a bar whose owner was the singer in a punk/rock band, The Jumps, who had their own label. Went to a couple of gigs they organised with associated acts. Punk, ska, oi! all passed through this Japanese hall of mirrors.
